Most writers are observers of the human condition. An understanding of our fellow man informs the narrative. Against that backdrop it has long been my view that the approval we seek most is that of our peers.
Whether it be a lawyers , plumbers or doctors, it is the recognition and admiration bestowed by peers that is of the highest value.
It would seem that writers are no different. Three of the world's most celebrated authors Hilary Mantel, Ian McEwan and Richard Ford have been snubbed by their peers and omitted from the nominations for the prestigious Folio prize.
The nominations and awards are in the gift of an academy of writers, critics and editors from around the world. Some wry observers have commented that their exclusion may have something to do with their success in the often pointless world of awards.
Interesting don't you think?
