“Hey! That’s my jacket!” I walked back into the bar and this guy was wearing my fuckin leather jacket. I was going on fumes. He looked at me.
“Says you. Prove it.”
“I left it here. It’s…it’s a Mansfield small mens—take it off and look at the fuckin tag.”
“It’s mine now.” He was tough, with a Southie accent and curly black hair. I was drunk as hell, gonna die probably over a leather jacket but these days I didn’t care.
“You know it’s mine.” I looked into his dark brown eyes.
“Let’s go get a bottle,” he said.
“Sure,” I said.
We walked in a miasma of Jack through his neighborhood .Row houses and stoops. Snowflakes intermittent. I was wearing the jacket. We sat on a stoop.
“Lookit this,” he said, turning his bare arms while running his palms over them. Round scars marked his skin at even intervals, covering his arms from his wrist to his bicep. “When I was a kid,” he said, “my old man and old lady, they liked to get drunk and use my arms for a fuckin ashtray.” He sat on the stoop in his t-shirt and looked at me.
“I love you,” I said. He laughed and passed me the bottle.
“Yeah, well. How about that.” We talked until dawn. I staggered back to my dorm room in another part of the city and that’s all I remember.
