I Have recently retired from senior corporate roles in large IT companies and following my life long passion for writing! From a very young age I was always reading and I owe a great deal to my Gran for taking me every week to the Library. I didn't always enjoy my boarding school experience but reading was the perfect way of escaping into a different world. I lead a busy life with 7 daughters, a son, stepson, 2 horses, a dog and 2 cats! I particularly enjoy fast paced thrillers with a twist which describes my novels.
I recently recieved an early copy of this thriller for review purposes. As it is by a famous pair of cinematic crime thriller scriptwriters known as the king and queen of Scandinavian crime, and it was a good read, I thought I would give everyone a heads up!
This is an interesting and atmospheric thriller set in Sweden. It starts with a terrible crime 24 years earlier and then fast forwards to the present and a series of murders.
The central character initially is Olivia, a young police student who decides to invetigate the murder 24 years ago as a Summer assignment. We then meet a former police Inspector Stilton who had investigated the original crime and for me was the most interesting of a generally well defined group of characters. His circumstances have changed for the worst and his relationship with Olivia makes for an unusual team as they set about solving the old and new crimes.
I liked that it was a well written, intelligent, thriller that had plenty of action but it was the interesting characters that carried the story not just the events. There is a real mixture of very different characters who through their individuality all enrich the story.
Like any good thriller, there is a good revelation halfway through the book and another major twist at the end, which you won't see coming!
I understand that this will be made into a TV drama in 2015, which does not surprise me and I look forward to watching!
I give it a strong 4*
"The spring tides are the highest of the year in Nordkoster; the beach will be covered in particularly deep water tonight. Three men on the beach are digging a hole, covertly watched by a young boy. His intrigue turns to horror as he makes out the fourth figure of the woman for whom the hole is intended. Buried up to her neck in the sand, the high tide is rapidly approaching. Still screaming in terror, the victim takes her last breath as water fills her nose and mouth—in her stomach, she feels her baby kick. And her waters break. The abhorrent crime remains unsolved 24 years later; but gruesome violence is still prevalent. A gang has been killing homeless people in parks, filming their attacks, and broadcasting them on the internet. The police have their work cut out trying to keep abreast of the crime wave. Olivia Rönning hopes to follow in her father's footsteps and join their ranks in the next few months as she completes her training; she has only one last hurdle to overcome over the summer break, a challenge from her professor to pick a cold case and solve it. Should be simple, she thinks. Little does she know the world she is getting involved in, the danger she faces, and the ugly truths she risks uncovering."
