Rogue Elements by Hector Macdonald
Book review by novelist Simonetta Wenkert
Rogue Elements, Hector Macdonald’s latest novel, is a Post-Snowden spy
thriller dealing with the war against drugs. When a reforming politician is
assassinated, a cast of brilliant outsiders or “rogue elements” are swept into
the action. These include a disgraced spymaster, Madeleine Wraye, her
protege, Simon Arkell, a ruthless Israeli hit man, Yadin, and a New York teen
hacker called Danny. Fast-paced, global, edgy and utterly compelling, it kept
me up late for all the right reasons. Suspense combines with topical
engagement which absorbs and challenges on critical contemporary themes
such as the legalization of class-A drugs and the role of the intelligence
agencies in an increasingly complex digital world. I loved it and recommend it
as the perfect summer read.
